Derby attire

Full Derby Outfit 2012 with hat

If you’re from KY you know that the Kentucky Derby is a big deal here. My planning this year failed miserably because Tim was actually at Churchill Downs serving up the Woodford Reserve $1000 Mint Juleps. And somehow most of the people I know were either at the event working, out of town, or just wanted to quietly watch the race at home (and I think some were partying with a group of parrotheads.)

But I decided I was going to dress up anyway, posted on facebook to see if anyone had any last minute invites and crossed my fingers that a party would either appear or someone would at least go have a Mint Julep at a bar with me to watch the Derby itself.

Nope, no such luck but I was determined to head out anyway. I did luck out that there was actually an available seat at Harry’s bar over in Palomar.

And I chickened out on the hat mostly because I didn’t want to either block someone’s view, hit someone with it or take it off and have to find a place to store it.

  • Hat:Forever21 Basketweave Floppy Hat for only $5.50! I had come across this the night before and thought it was perfect.
  • Dress: strapless from White House / Black Market bought a couple of years ago.
  • Cardi: Target Mossimo bought a couple of years ago. Because I didn’t want to wear a strapless bra with the strapless dress I threw this on so you couldn’t tell. Usually I don’t tie it but it worked better with this dress tied.
  • Shoes: Simply Vera heels from Kohl’s mentioned here previously.

And in case you were wondering, I did drive through betting at Keeneland on Friday. I really wanted Hansen to win. Actually the horse with the best name was Daddy Long Legs but usually those that I’m drawn to like that tend to come in dead last. I had bet Hansen, Bodemeister, and Take Charge Indy for the trifecta and I had also bet a couple of others as well. The only winning ticket I had was Bodeimeister to Place (which means come in first or second) so I will get $6.20 back of the $18 I bet 🙂

Business Outfit – dusty rose & gray

I had a board meeting yesterday so I was aiming for business conservative without being completely boring. The shirt is a very light dusty rose which comes across more like a cream in the photos.

Outfit details below. Click any image to enlarge.

Dusty rose silk Talbots top, Chico's gray slack, business outfit

I’m wearing:

  • Simply Vera by Vera Wang black heels seen in my previous blog post here. I got a lot of comments on these. Lot’s of questions about whether or not I thought I was going to fall in them too because they’re so tall. 🙂 I wouldn’t want to wear them daily but they’re fine for a day with a little walking and a fair amount of sitting in between.
  • Talbot’s outlet dusty rose silk top seen in this previous post. I love how simple the draped strips of fabric at the neckline make the blouse just that little bit interesting.
  • Chico’s gray dress slacks. These are a great staple item for me. So much so that I bought a second pair when they were on sale. Long enough to wear with heels and short enough that somehow I can still wear flats without them puddling at my feet. I believe they are the “Smooth Stretch Flare Trouser Pant, Style: 570034128” which they don’t seem to have gray in at the moment.

“Foiled Again” – gold foiling or gold leaf on clothes & nails

“Foiled again” get it? Ok, that would make more sense if I had previously written about gold foiling or even any kind of gold on clothes, right?

Apparently I’ve been getting into golds lately. As exhibited by both some recent clothing purchases as well as nail polish choice.

Outfit Top to bottom (click images for a larger version):

  • Earrings: Kohl’s daisy fuentes® Gold-Tone Hammered Drop Earring Set I had removed the chain portion of the coin style earrings and they look better.
  • Tank: Talbot’s Outlet (one of my recent gold purchases) cream with gold foil streaks.
  • Wrap: Tabot’s Outlet (in the fall) it’s a heathered cream linen that’s a perfect weight for spring and fall. Very versatile.
  • Bracelet: thrifted.
  • Jeans: Walmart (shhhh … why do I end up with jeans from there?)
  • Shoes: Lauren Conrad leopard print ballet flat from Kohl’s. Loving these, they also go with a LOT.

Then there was the yoga capris I bought that had a foil leopard print pattern. This wasn’t actually on purpose. It was more because I didn’t like the pairs that had funky color tops and they didn’t have a plain black and I had a gift card burning a hole in my pocket:

Then there are the nails.

Essie "A Crewed Interest" Spring 2012 color and Sally Hansen Crackle in "Antique Gold" Peachy Pink and gold

  • Three coats of Essie in “A Crewed Interest” which is a Spring 2012 color.
  • Topped with a single stripe of Sally Hansen Crackle polish in “Antique Gold”

It’s a nice subtle effect that reminds me of gold leaf. And the peachy pink is like a less sheer version of Zoya’s Lulu. That “point shoe pink / peach” I had been looking for for years and suddenly found. Repeatedly apparently.

The gold crackle is actually a little preview of something I’m going to do a giveaway on sometime in the next month. So if you don’t normally read my blog, you might want to stay tuned by either subscribing to the rss, the emails or my twitter or youtube channels!

Are you wearing more gold lately? Is this a trend or just a weird accident that I’ve recently purchased more than one item that was gold foiled?

Next thing you know I’ll own a gold sequin mini skirt…. uhhh probably not anytime soon (though they are CUTE on other people!)

Kohl’s Shoes: Candie’s Caposh in taupe & Simply Vera Wang platform heels in black

I’m a little behind on sharing my recent clothes purchases and outfits. Since I’ve got some more pictures with these shoes I’ll go ahead and start with them.

So at some point in a random shopping trip I had tried on the Vera Wang Platform heels in black  (labeled “Dali” on the box) at Kohl’s and hadn’t bought them. I also loved the blue and neon yellow pair but couldn’t rationalize them as a purchase. Both stuck in my mind so I decided to go back for at least the black pair. Aren’t they pretty!

Simply Vera Wang black pump from Kohl's

Ok they’re basic black but still, a step up from the last pair of black heels I bought. Wow again – it’s been 3 years since I bought a pair of black heels?

Then I spotted Candie’s Caposh in faux suede taupe with a chunky heel. They were only $19 (marked down from $59.99) with a “limited quantity” sticker.

They look so lonely right?
They say “take me with you Hilary…” Can’t you hear them?

Candie's Caposh in Taupe faux suede

Anyway, fabulous chunky heel, lovely soft color. And though I’m not a huge fan of suede or faux suede I don’t think I would have liked these in regular leather.

I think these will go well with a lot of outfits and the chunky heel and platform make them a bit easier to wear.

So here’s the little bit of drama related to these shoes:
I got to the cash register at Kohl’s to check out with my shoes and they do the usual check to make sure there’s nothing else in the box and that the shoes are a matching pair and match what the box says they are. The shoes were an 8.5 for the left and an 8 for the right! I hadn’t even noticed, I’m guessing because my left foot is a hint larger than my right anyway. The cashier says “I’ll have to check and see if we can find the other one or else we can’t sell you these.” Who, what!! NOOOOOO!!!!! Ok go check. Stay calm.

Someone comes back with another set that are mismatched. But they match them up so it looks like we have two left in 8.5 and two right in 8’s. I say “they fit as they were and I’m willing to buy them mismatched anyway.” They say “we can’t sell them to you, you could check another store though.” To which I respond “but they’re ‘Limited Quantity’ and they fit, I don’t care that they’re mismatched!” and in my head I’m thinking that I didn’t see these shoes at the other Kohl’s which is a good 45 miles away from the one I’m at anyway. So one woman goes off to check some manual or maybe call someone and as I’m standing trying the shoes on at the register again just to prove that they fit I realize that they don’t have two left 8.5 and two right 8’s – they got confused when trying to match them and actually have a set of 8.5 and a set of 8’s!

So disaster averted!

But I still have to wonder why they wouldn’t have sold me a mismatch pair if their match wasn’t anywhere in the store. I’m sure it’s just some policy taken one step too far, but still perplexing.

Have you ever had a cashier refuse to sell you merchandise because of some store policy taken too far?

Some random shoe shopping

Neither of the cuter shoes were available in my size. The one shoe I did try on was a bit too funky for me but I thought I would share the photo of the zigg zagg heel anyway. I really did like the nude pump with the decorative heel.

These three photos were taken at Burlington Coat Factory. I usually don’t mind looking through disorganized discount items but the selection here were a bit more of a mess than most places. Some shoes didn’t seem to have a match, some shoes didn’t seem to have a price or correlating box. Mostly the shoes I wanted weren’t available in my size.

What I wore today – argyle in the snow

Today I’m wearing more for practicality between the freezing cold (20’s!) and a chiropractic appointment (wanted to feel the short massage without a bulky sweater.)

So I’m layered with:
– a plain black long sleeve tee (origin unknown)
– argyle sweater; Merona thifted
– jeans; walmart’s faded glory (no I don’t really like shopping there but love this pair of jeans)
– boots; leather uggs I’ve been wearing for around 4 years & purchased half price at TJ maxx (I just change the inserts for $20 each year and re-waterproof)
– car coat; Macy’s I think
– broach; grandmother’s

Gorillapod and a glif means now I can take more photos faster so I might be doing this more often.
