This week in hair – beautyriot.com

So I’m subscribed to a LOT of beauty e-newsletters (luckily they are pretty easy to go through quickly and they are fun.) Today I wanted to share one of the ones that’s had a bit of a face life… or hair lift I should say.

Beauty Riot’s e-newsletter is now featuring weekly hairstyles. It’s short, it’s simple, shows lots of celebs with great hairdos and it’s great to see what’s out there and get some ideas for your own hair. Here’s a link to this week’s “This week in hair”:

Here’s just a sample (there are 9 hairstyles each week):

Headband Mania

One of my new favorite things are headbands (I think I’m becoming a preppy girl….. ugh…) My head isn’t shaped right for the ones that go all the way around your head or scarfs (they slide too much) but they still look great on the people that can wear them. My favorites right now are the thick headbands and the really thin ones, very basic and classic.

Good headbands under $10 include: Xhilaration (found at Target), Conair, Goody, and Scunci (which I found at Walgreens and Rite Aide)

I also bought a very cute fabric headband on ebay (but as I mentioned before, my head is not the right shape.) There’s also someone selling cute headbands made from Vera Bradley fabric on ebay (and I checked the Vera Bradley site, they don’t seem to make headbands) which brings me to my next point.

REVIEW: Burt’s Bees Shampoo & Conditioner

Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Grapefruit & Sugar Beet Shampoo & Conditioner

Sometimes the real test of a product is whether you’re happy with something once the newness wears off.

Other things you know much sooner that the product isn’t going to work for you: like the Burt’s Bees shampoo and conditioner with my naturally curly hair (and local hard water.)

With my hair wet, it was super slick and clean feeling – almost squeaky clean. But when it dried I had to put more product in it than I ever have in my life to keep it from being a giant frizz bomb. I applied mouse and two types of hairspray heavily before my hair looked normal.

Since I had straightened my hair the first time I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and try it a second time, applying mouse while my hair was still wet and letting it curl. It still didn’t work for me … my hair looked ratty.

I will say that since using it and then switching back to my regular shampoo and conditioner my hair has been looking a bit glossier and healthier. It definitely had some clarifying capabilities. I think it would be an awesome shampoo and conditioner for someone with naturally straight hair. I however have already swapped my purchase on makeup alley…

John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves

Although I’m not a blonde, I loved Beach Blonde Ocean Waves… if I buy any product more than once I usually really love it. The bad thing is that somehow most of the products I fall in love with get quickly discontinued. Now that I’m getting towards the end of the bottle I have here I decided to write the company to see if they had plans to bring it back or for information on where to find an online retailer that still had some in stock. Below is their response:

“Thank you for your interest in Beach Blonde. All of Beach Blonde is now discontinued due to low sales. We will have a replacement product for Ocean Waves only called Brilliant Brunette Starlit Waves in Feb of 2006. Starlit Waves can be used on any hair color. You may still be able to get Beach Blonde products via medichest.com or folica.com while supplies last.

Please try our Sheer Blonde line for possible Beach Blonde substitutes as follows: Kelp Help – Blonde Hair Repair Cool Dip – Sheer Blonde Highlight Activating Shampoos Smooth Seas – Sheer Blonde Glistening Perfection Conditioners

Thank you for the opportunity to be of service.”

Yay! Just thought I would share. πŸ™‚

As for Ocean Waves, it doesn’t create curls when you have none really, it just helps to bring out what you have naturally. Be careful to not apply too much because if you do, you’ll end up feeling and looking a bit oily

REVIEW: de-luxe Conditioner, Rosemary Mint

I was looking for something to replace my St. Ives Intensive Conditioner Moisture Treatment (since the company has stopped making it) and came across this since it’s rosemary mint.

This is a good lightweight conditioner similar to the St. Ives but not the amazing miracle cure. If you don’t like the smell of real mint, you’re not going to like this. If you have fine hair, you probably will love this because it’s very light. Quality ingredient list but I’m going to keep looking. Definately a good conditioner for the $5 price range. πŸ™‚

REVIEW: Conair Satin Finish, Instant Heat Ultra Slim Straightener, 3/4″ CS4CS

For a frame of reference, I also own a Conair Instant Heat large barrel curling iron which is what I have been using to straighten my hair (I know it sounds weird but it can be done – you just run it down your hair instead of rolling your hair up on it.)

Conair Satin Finish, Instant Heat Ultra Slim Straightener, 3/4″ CS4CS
PROS: It heats up quickly for those times when you’re in a rush. I like the slim design because you can easily get up close to the root of your hair. It’s easy to get the ends straight.

CONS: I thought it was going to heat up hotter than it does – the settings on this go up to 25, the setting on my curling iron by Conair goes up to 20 – both seem to heat to about the same level. It takes just as long if not a hint longer to straighten my hair. There is a piece of plastic after the heating plates to keep them from pressing together too hard – it’s easy to close it on your hair accidentally which hurts (I usually don’t notice that this has happened until I start to slide it down my hair sometimes pulling hair out. Big design mistake in the product I think.)

Would I buy it again? No.
Will I continue to use it? Anyone want to buy it from me? I’ll sell it cheap… Probably not since I can straighten my hair to about the same extent with my large barreled curling iron and I don’t pull hair out accidentally with it.
Would I recommend this to anyone else? Probably not – it’s ok but I would probably try a different straightener if I had the chance. I’m still looking for a straightener that will give me that almost unnaturally straight look without having to spend a really long time getting there.

I’ll probably review the Conair large barrel curling iron that I use later in case you’re wondering. πŸ™‚
