Ring accent on a scarf
in place of a broach

So I don’t have a Herme’s Scarf, or the lovely YSL ring, BUT I have some larger cocktail rings I’ve never really worn that would look good in place of a broach on a scarf.

 

I DO have this vintage scarf I bought on ebay 
and the ring was my grandmother’s.

I’m using a long rectangular scarf instead of a square. I threaded one side through the ring one way and the other side through the other way and tied a loose knot in the back so the ring was secure and wouldn’t fall off. I let the ends trail off the sides because the scarf did not start as a square like hers.

Mixing Nail Polishes – Lattes at Tiffany’s

I SWEAR this isn’t going to be a nail polish blog. It’s just what I’m a little obsessed with at the moment.

So I’ve been looking for a warm grey for awhile so a couple of weeks ago I was mixing polishes and came across a combo I liked. Easiest way to do this is put some packing tape on the counter and mix away to determine if it’s worth the polish to make a larger batch like so (then mix with a brush.)

I looked on ebay and found some empty mini nail polish bottles for a decent price and ordered some. (I actually like OPI’s “You don’t know Jaques” which I found out after I bought some mini bottles.)

Anyway they are nice little bottles and I mixed up two different colors.

The Latte sorta grey brown color I mentioned above made using Zoya “Tao”, Sinful Colors “Snow Me White”, and Revlon’s “Hot for Chocolate” :

And the one I’m going to call “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” because it reminds me of the tiffany color (though probably not exact to be honest) made combining Sinful Colors “Snow Me White” and Sinful Colors “Aqua”:

What are some alternatives to selling your clothes at a consignment store?

Question: I have lots of name brand clothing items that don’t fit/I don’t want any more, and I don’t want to just give them away. I haven’t been able to find any consignment stores in my area. Any ideas?

Searching google will probably help find at least a few consignment stores but if none are a good match for the items you have, here are a couple of ideas. They are listed in order of what will probably make you the most money:

  1. Look for vintage shops particularly if your items are older OR JEANS. They may be willing to consign or flat out buy your items.
  2. Sell your clothes on ebay. This works particularly well if you have high end or name brand items. Be sure to take good photos and use a lot of description words so more people see your item. If you have a lot of clothes to sell you might want to invest in a hanging dress form.
  3. Look for a “Clothes Mentor “store or a “Plato’s closet” or similar to buy your gently used items instead of consigning. http://www.platoscloset.com/ or http://www.clothesmentor.com/
  4. Cheapcycle, like freecycle but for low priced used items, can be great or it can be a bit of a pain depending on who responds to your post. If you don’t have time, I wouldn’t try this route since you have to plan to meet with people.

  5. Craigslist … this shouldn’t really need an explanation.
  6. Yardsale, Garage Sale, or organize an Apartment community basement sale.
  7. Road Trip! Research reliable consignment stores that will mail you a check and then make a road trip. Some may even let you send photos so they can tell you whether or not your trip will be worth it. This is a little bit lower on the list because it’s more time and effort.
  8. Organize a clothing swap with friends or neighbors. Search for “clothing swap tips” and you’ll find plenty of suggestions on how to organize one. You won’t make money on this one but your clothes will find a new home AND you’ll hopefully end up with some new clothes to add to your wardrobe.
  9. Last but not least, I know you said you didn’t want to give them away but sometimes it’s just better to donate some items. Sometimes it takes too much time or effort or what you own really isn’t worth that much but could help out someone else’s wardrobe. Goodwill is my top pick for clothes but Salvation Army is also a good option. You can take a tax deduction because these are charities. http://locator.goodwill.org/ or http://www.satruck.org/search-arc

White Skirts

So versatile and classic … I bought 2! Both I bought on ebay for a steal and I’m loving them.

One is an Ann Taylor Loft white eyelet skirt, it’s a classic a-line skirt that falls just below my knees.

The other is a brand I haven’t heard of before. It’s a tiered “peasant / boho” style skirt that falls just a little lower than the other. I made sure I picked one that didn’t look like it had too much volume to it and was more like an a-line skirt as well so it doesn’t look like a skirt that missed being part of a batch of tie dye. 🙂

I have quite a collection of polo shirts (I didn’t really mean to have so many … they’re just easy to buy and wear) – these skirts help to make them just a bit dressier than my usual of pairing them with nice jeans. And since the skirts are white and basic and go with ALMOST all tops I should be able get a few good years out of them just like my jeans.
